S212, S-212, Wildland Fire Chain Saws
NWCG S 212 Wildland Fire Chain sawscourse is designed to meet the needs of wildland firefighters, while recognizing wildland firefighters, DPW and DOT personnel frequently assist with storm debris removal activities. The course is designed to train students in the proper use of chainsaws and techniques necessary to prepare for their functional role as a chainsaw operator on a wildland fire incident. Course includes a one-day session on storm debris removal. Focus of the storm debris session will be on tension and reactive forces in debris piles, tree felling techniques, limbing and bucking, spring poles and a discussion regarding interactions with utility crews and other public service issues.
Prerequisite(s): Qualified as FFT2

Please bring the following mandatory items to class:
Equipment:
Nomex pants & shirts
Leather lug sole boots(no hiking boots)
Leather gloves
Ear protection
Eye protection
Hard hat w/strap
Highly recommended:
Bug repellant
Rain gear/ winter gear
** If agency does not provide these items they can be checked out from the academy supply cache
Optional equipment: Working chainsaw, max bar length appropriate for saw, must have chain break & spark arrester. 3-5 pound falling axe & wedges. – Chainsaw chaps (must overlap boot 2”, clean with no cuts). Field Maintenance Tool Kit: files – flat & found, file guide, combination tools, depth gauge tool, extra chain & starter cord, bar nuts & spark plugs, E-clip.
You will be working outside 3 days of this class make sure you are prepared for the weather!!

Additional information:
● Wildland Fire Classes will be held at Suffolk County Fire Academy.
● Breakfast and Lunch is to be provided by you.
● All classes will start at Briefing held each morning at 0815. All students and staff must attend. Come meet the staff & find out what the plan is for the day!
● You must check-in prior to attending class on the first day. Check-in will begin Monday, December 8th at 8:00AM. Check- in/Demob will be at the Suffolk County Fire Academy.
● Students are responsible for handling their own hotel reservations & cancellations.
●Cancellations must be received by December 1st, 2025 for a full refund. After this date, a fee of $80 per class day will be billed. No refunds for no-shows. Substitutions are welcome.
To receive a class certificate of completion, you must arrive by the scheduled start time and depart after completing the course. Please make sure your travel arrangements do not conflict with your attendance at class. No Certificates will be handed out until all outstanding balances have been settled.
